1.3 University

There aren’t many university courses that catch my interests due to my main interest being in writing narrative. While I like drawing traditional art, I like and prefer making concept sketches and don’t think I would like art to become a full time job for me. Therefore I searched for more courses relying on creative writing and games studies in general. However as this is quite limited and I currently don’t know if I want to study at University or not, I only came across a few courses that peaked my interest.

Course 1. Portsmouth University: Creative Writing MA

https://www.port.ac.uk/study/courses/ma-creative-writing

For this course, the qualifications/experience needed are a honours degree in a related subject as well as qualifications and/or experience as a creative writer will also be considered. An English language proficiency at a minimum IELTS of 6.5 (which I don’t need to worry about).

Here below is a screenshot of what I’ll be able to achieve after learning the skills at the course as well as the subjects taught in the course.

Open days for the course are currently unavailable for starting in 2020, so I will have to keep an eye out for when they’re released.

I believe I have the qualifications necessary for the course. My only worry is needing a degree in a similar subject, so I will need to look into the course further if I wished to study it. The skills offered are interesting and I can see them helping greatly in my desire to be a narrative designer. I like the appeal to the course as its focus is creative writing, which is what I love most about games and films and would love to pursue further- my only issues are I don’t necessarily want to sit and listen to lectures and in general I don’t think i want to jump into University.

Course 2. Staffordshire University: Games Studies BA (Hons)

For this course, entry requirements include 112 UCAS Points, A levels at a BBC/Btech at a DMM.

I believe I can pass my current course to a degree so I can get into the Unieristy course. The course itself sounds great and offered modules for each year sound very appealing. My biggest worry though is the University is very far from my where I live, so travelling back and forth each day isn’t ideal menaing I would have to stay in student accommodation- which I really don’t want to do as I hate being far from somewhere I’m familiar for long periods of time.

Course 3. University of East London: BA (Hons) Computer Games Design: Story Development

Entry requirements for the course include 112 UCAS points, a diploma with 25 points and minimum 15 points at a higher level, passes at A2 in at least 2 subjects and expected t have a 4/c in English and Maths.

I strongly believe have and can obtain the GCSEs and qualifications needed for the course. The skills offered by the course sounds very strong and I’m very intrigued by them. Out of the 3 Universities I’ve studied on this page, University of East London appeals to me the most. My only worry is travelling, again. While its nowhere near as far as Staffordshire, its a little out of my comfort zone, so I’ll have to research further into it.
